The Human Heart Part 1

THE HUMAN HEART
Although the word for heart” occurs more than 900 times in Scripture, it is almost never used as the physical body organ that circulates the blood. Commonly, the “heart” refers to: (1) The seat of the intellect; (2) the feelings; and (3) the will. For example: “every imagination of the thoughts of his heart” (Gen. 6:5) would refer to the intellect; “comfort ye your hearts” (Gen. 18:5) would imply feelings; and “seek him with the whole heart” (Psa. 119:2) would mean with the will.

The “heart” is often used to signify one’s innermost being; for example, “It grieved him at his heart” (Gen. 6:6). In modern usage, the “heart” means the affections, as: “If riches increase, set not your heart upon them” (Psa. 62:10). Also, different parts of the body are used figuratively in Scripture to denote functions of the soul. For instance, we might say, “My heart is touched in sympathy with you,” while Scripture might say, “bowels of mercies [compassion]” (Col. 3:12).

Hebrews 3:10 says, “They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways”; which refers to their wrong thinking, and possibly also to misplaced affections. In Jeremiah 17:9, the whole moral nature of fallen man is described.—” The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” One’s true inner character is openly revealed by the way he lives.

In this study we will consider some of Jesus’ words concerning the heart of man. He reminds us of the importance of making and keeping the heart pure if we would make heaven our home. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

This might be paraphrased—”Guard your heart with constant effort and carefulness; for out of the heart comes the visible revelation of what one really is--even his secret life.” (Read verses 20-27.)

You must admit you are a sinner, confess your sin to Jesus, repent (turn from all you know is wrong), ask Jesus to come in your heart, and begin to follow Jesus by reading and obeying his word and go to a bible believing church that teaches his word. May God through Christ bless you!
