The Gates of Hell Will Not Prevail

When Jesus stated, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt 16:18).
Many people have interpreted this passage to be defensive. That the church will just have to hold on by the skin of their teeth. But when Christ spoke this truth he was speaking from an offensive mindset.  Right in this place at Caesarea Philippi in Northern Israel, idolatry and witchcraft were being practiced. Jesus told the apostles that if they would go forth with the truth of Jesus being the CHRIST (MESSIAH) the SON of the living God, Hell would falter, the gates that hold the inhabitants would be torn off and millions would be set free. Consider the following verses:

Isa 28:6 b “and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.”

God will provide power by his Spirit if we will turn the battle to the gates of Hell.

Gen 22:17  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

Gen 24:60  And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

And let thy seed (those born of God) possess (take down) the gate of those which hate them.

Jdg 16:3  And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.

I have heard people and coaches say defenses win games as long as they put the offense back on the field, but if any sports team or army is only playing defense it will eventually become weary and fail. Our best defense is a good offense.

Consider the armor of God in Ephesians 6 there is not backplate on the Roman Soldier because God wants us to go forward and not retreat!

One of the most beautiful pictures of the church in the scripture regarding this thought is found in Song of Solomon 6:4-12.

Son 6:4  Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.

In verse four, we see both Jew and Gentile in one body (one faith) Tirzah means delightsome, it was in Samaria and was the trading capital, a picture of the Gentiles (those who have come to Christ, those who have traded their sins for his salvation), and Jerusalem (capital of the Jews, the city of God) ( or in other words the completed Jew in Christ) as an army marching with every nations' flag they have conquered.

Son 6:5  Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.

In verse five, they are beautiful to the Lord Jesus because they are covered by his blood and obedient even in difficult terrain. They are obedient because he owns their hearts (hair-obedience 1 Cor 11:1-13) as a result of the blood of the goat (sin offering) (hills of Gilead represent hard trials), Gilead means (heap of testimony compare Rev 12:10). Their testimony holds up under the enemy's attack.

Son 6:6  Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.

Verse 6 Her actions ( teeth, not just talk) are pure and she is bearing twins two times the fruit, fruitful (double fruit), not a barren sheep among them, they are reproducing and filling the earth with the gospel ( because she is well nourished by his word and thus reproduces).

Son 6:7  As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.

Verse 7 their consciences are sweet and as Paul declared void of offense toward God and man.

Son 6:8  There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
Son 6:9  My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.

In Verses 8-9 we see a picture of the queen of Sheba's testimony about Solomon's house, servants, wisdom, and behavior in this verse regarding the queens and concubines (1 Kings 10:1-13).
Son 6:10  Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?

Verse 10, She looks like the Morning  (Please Read Isa 60:1) she has been transformed into the Second Adam's perfect help meet, fair as the moon she reflects the light of the SON, Clear as the Sun look at (Revelation 21:18) and see the gold of her streets was like transparent glass, to be transparent, real, alive (2 Corinthians 4:1-2). And terrible as an army with banners coming over the mountains with those banners waving from every country nation they have conquered with Christs love and power every nation, every race will be partakers in Christ.

Son 6:11  I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.

Verse 11, speaks of the churches willingness to serve and nurture those who need Christ and help minister to the immature wherever he leads (even in the valleys).

Son 6:12  Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib
The name Amminadib can be translated, "Thy people are willing." (see Ps. 110:3)

Verse 12,  anytime the Spirit of God prompted my spirit I was like a war chariot (Elijah and Elisha both were called the chariot of the Lord)  being willing to Carry The Lord of the battle (the gospel) to fight the enemy of our souls to tear down his gates and set the captives free.

I am reminded of a song the saints of old sang:  Enjoy

You must admit you are a sinner, confess your sin to Jesus, repent (turn from all you know is wrong), ask Jesus to come in your heart, and begin to follow Jesus by reading and obeying his word and go to a bible believing church that teaches his word. May God through Christ bless you!
